"We needed to learn to develop simple key messages, and then communicate them effectively. All those who did the training walked away feeling they had gained a much better understanding of the workings of the media and also of how to better approach and manage media interviews."

Prof. Simon Gandevia, Prince of Wales
Medical Research Institute

"I've worked with Editor Group, particularly Grant Butler, for more than three years and across a wide range of my most valued clients from TV hosts to major manufacturing brands. They are reliable, well prepared and focus on in depth feedback in each session. They work intelligently with clients to ensure they leave well informed, confident and impressed."

Melanie King, Head of PR, 303 Group

"I came away having achieved my objective, which was to feel more confident in talking with the media/journalists. Thanks for your insight."

Marketing Director, Major Telecom Company

"Thank you for an excellent course. I found it particularly useful to learn about the journalist's perspective from a trainer with direct experience in the media."

Michelle Hannon, Partner Pro Bono and Corporate Social Responsibility, Gilbert + Tobin

Media Skills Training: Become Great Talent

Editor Group's Media Skills Training is designed to help you improve your relationship with the media. It is delivered by former top-level journalists with a focus on the business media.

What You Will Learn

Each Media Training course will introduce you to the way the media works and provide invaluable insights into improving your performance in print, radio, TV or online interviews.

This is achieved through a mix of presentations, practice interviews (on- or off-camera) and real examples. By the end of the course, you should feel better informed and confident to work with journalists, producers and bloggers.

Course Content

Editor Group's Media Training sessions comprise a mix of theory and practical exercises.
The theory session covers:

  • What is the media?
  • Who are journalists and how do they work?
  • What makes a story?
  • Presentation skills
  • Identifying and refining key messages
  • Responding to difficult questions
  • Building quality relationships
  • Your organisation's media policy.

This discussion is interspersed with media clips to illustrate key points. We then put participants through their paces in practice media interviews based on questions that have been researched according to your requirements.

Experienced Trainers

Editor Group's media trainers have all worked in senior roles as editors and journalists at leading media outlets including The Australian Financial Review, Reader's Digest and ZDNet.

Our lead media trainers are Grant Butler, Tony Spencer-Smith and Iain Ferguson. We also work with leading independent news cameramen to prepare executives for television appearances.
