Effective Writing for Everyone

In today's business environment, everyone writes for a living, though few consider the importance of effective writing. This two-day business writing course (also available in a one-day version) takes you right through good writing, from the foundations of grammar and plain English to the production of well-written business documents.

Who should come

This course is for anyone who writes at work. The course will help you produce high-quality professional writing, by improving your command of grammar, punctuation and spelling. You will also learn how to communicate clearly and succinctly using plain English, and how to properly structure your documents.

Punctuation
 
  From hyphens to colons. These sentence road signs guide the reader to your meaning.
 
Grammar    Common grammatical errors. Outlines the problem areas of grammar, where most mistakes occur.
 
Planning and research
 
 

The pre-writing phase. Deciding who you are writing for and gathering all the material you will need is as important as the actual writing.  
 

Writing clearly and concisely   How to cut out clutter and clichés and replace them with clear, concise language.
 
Structure: clarity, logic and persuasion   Basic principles of structuring business documents. No document can work without a clear and effective structure.
 
Tools of the trade Dictionaries, style guides and more. No writer should be without these basic tools of the writing craft.
 
Exercises   Putting principles into practice. A range of stimulating tailored writing exercises throughout the day show you how to put the writing principles into practice.
 

The two-day course has these extra modules:

Spelling    Mastering those tricky words. Words that are often misused, particularly tricky word pairs.
 
Editing and proofreading    Revision and accuracy. How to turn the first draft into a polished and error-free final version.
 
Mastering common documents  

How to produce literate letters, memorable memos and carefully crafted emails.
 

Beating writer's block   How to get going. Techniques for conquering the fear of the blank screen and tapping into your creativity.
